Mission

The Office of Indigent Legal Services and the associated Indigent Legal Services Board are responsible for examining, overseeing, and improving the quality of New York's county-based system of providing legal representation to people who are unable to afford an attorney.

Budget Highlights

The FY 2017 Executive Budget recommends $99.4 million All Funds support for the Office of Indigent Legal Services, an increase of $12.4 million from FY 2016, and a workforce level of 19 FTEs, unchanged from FY 2016.

The increase in funding levels from FY 2016 is a result of the settlement agreement in the Hurrell-Harring, et al, v. State of New York case, regarding indigent legal services in the following five counties: Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Suffolk and Washington.
